Ba Be Lake (Vietnamese: Ho Ba Be, Ba Be meaning “Three Lakes” in the local Tay language) is the largest natural fresh water lake, stretching about 8 kilometers in the north-south direction. The surface area of the lake fluctuates between 3 and 5 km² between dry and wet season. Unlike many lakes in Karst limestone areas, Ba Bê Lake never falls dry. Its average depth varies between 17 and 23 meters, the maximum depth is 35 meters. The lake lies about 150 meters above sea level, making it also Vietnam’s highest. The name “Three Lakes” refers to the three parts of the lake named Pe Leng, Pe Lu, and Pe Lam. All these three parts are connected into a single continuous body of water, however.

The Ta Han, Bo Lu, and Leng Rivers feed into the lake from the south and the west. During the dry season, water is drained from the lake northwards into the Nang River. During high floods in the wet season, the latter flow is reversed however, and the lake takes up water from the Nang River thereby acting as a buffer regulating flooding”.

Day 5: Lang Son Back To Ha Noi (165 km, 4 hours riding)

Sure that we should not miss market in this area during our motorbike tour. Lang Son has two markets worth visiting such as the Old Market and the Dong Kinh Market. We can buy items with cheap price from electronics and gadgets to textiles and house wares. It’s definitely buyer beware as there is lots of knock-offs of the original. If the markets aren’t your thing then just a couple of kilometers from town are two large beautiful caves and the ruins of the Mac Dynasty Citadel worth a visit.

Tam Thanh Cave contains a pond and offers great views of the surrounding farmlands. Nhi Thanh Cave, formed by the river that flows through it, has poems carved into the entrance by the man who discovered the cave in the 18th century. After the morning of exploration, it’s time for lunch and prepare for the trip back to Ha Noi.

The highway from Lang Son is a modern 4 lane divided highway that quickly carries down from the mountains, back onto the Red River Delta and into Ha Noi.
